Ga. man sentenced for supplying Iran's military | savannahnow.com
MACON — An American supplier was sentenced to more than three years in prison on Wednesday for shipping fighter jet and attack helicopter parts to help repair Iran’s aging aircraft fleet. Michael Todd apologized to the court and said the shipments were aimed at bolstering his struggling business, not threatening national security. But prosecutors said his decision put America’s military at risk and a federal judge agreed.

Large crime ring busted
Large crime ring busted
LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH RECOVERED ITEMSPublished: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 5:04 PM EDT.Law enforcement officers executed Special RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) search and seizure warrants in Emanuel and Toombs counties on Monday, July 20. Participating in the operation, along with Sheriff Tyson Stephens, were deputies and investigators from the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Department, East Central Georgia Task Force, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol, U.S. Marshals along with Toombs and Montgomery County officials. There were approximately 70 law enforcement officials involved.According to Emanuel County Sheriff Tyson Stephens, “This is only the third RICO operation I have ever been involved with during my 25 years as Emanuel County Sheriff.”
The investigation has been ongoing for seven months with the Vidalia Police Department. Some information dates back to 2005. The arrests have stopped one of the biggest theft and fencing ring operations ever noted along with an illegal drug distribution network.
According to District Attorney Hayward Altman, there was an unprecedented level of cooperation between the DA’s office and members of law enforcement. Altman says that his office, through Special Assistant District Attorney’s began a civil RICO investigation to parallel the criminal investigation. He says that his ADA’s will be looking into ill gotten gains (proceeds) from the criminal enterprise. Under Georgia Law those funds and real property may be subject to forfeiture to the government. These may in turn be used to fund the war on drugs and organized crime to keep the burden off of the taxpayers.
The Toombs County Grand Jury handed down a 42 count indictment on Monday. District Attorney Altman asked for a true bill on all counts. Arrested from Emanuel County were Truman Mckinney, 63, of 454 Leman Road; Ray Mckinney, 44, of 670 Pendleton Springs Church Road and Donald Mckinney, 41, 1237 Pendleton Springs Church Road. A total of twenty people were arrested as a result of the investigation.
Among the stolen items recovered were automobiles, four wheelers, lawn mowers, a large numbers of firearms, cash, stereo equipment, power tools, and many more items.http://www.forest-blade.com/articles/2009/07/21/news/doc4a662cbc9ef7e616024326.txt
Disorganized crime: Vidalia police bust racketeering ring
Disorganized crime: Vidalia police bust racketeering ring
Posted: Jul 21, 2009 6:02 PM EDT Updated: Jul 23, 2009 9:47 AM EDTBy Dal Cannady
VIDALIA, GA (WTOC) - Vidalia police detectives and local prosecutors call the arrests of 20 people Monday their first racketeering case ever.
Police chief Frank Waits says the suspects took part in stealing anything they could get their hands on or could sell on the street.
“People were giving them a Christmas shopping list,” Waits explained. “You’d say, ‘I want a Kenwood with a CD player, dual speakers.’ They’d find it, steal it and you’d get it at a discount price.”
In addition, police seized firearms of every description. They arrested their suspects Monday, the same day a grand jury heard the racketeering indictments. District attorney Hayward Altman said “organized crime” isn’t always as organized as it looks in the movies.
“They were dealing in burglaries, theft by taking, motor vehicle thefts, entering autos, violation of Georgia control substance act a variety of crimes,” he noted.
Chief Waits said the thefts stretch across Vidalia as well as Toombs, Montgomery and Emanuel counties. Half of the suspects come from one Toombs County family, the McKinney’s.
Family friend Pamela Carter was the most vocal among a group that showed up to defend them at a police news conference.
“They’re not like that. They’re not like that at all. They work hard all their lives,” she exclaimed. “One of those brothers is deathly ill, but he’s still trying to work to take care of the family.”
But police called their suspects “parasites” on the community.
“People who support these folks selling drugs and stealing from people just condone domestic terrorism,” the chief contended. “We send soldiers overseas to fight foreign terrorism. Well, we’re trying to defend the home front.”
Waits said people shopping for illegal deals will need to find their bargains somewhere else. Besides those arrested Monday, investigators found several suspects in other jails on unrelated charges. Two suspects remained at large.
He and Altman credited assistance on the case to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office, Lyons Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol and the United States Marshall’s Office.
